New Delhi: As the estrangd NRI couple refusing to arrive at a compromise formula, the Supreme Court on Thursday reserved its judgement on the rival claims for custody of their seven-year old son.
The apex court also snubbed the counsel for both the sides when they indulged in mutual recrimination about the mental status of the rival clients.
""Everybody has some psychic problem. It only differs in variation," a three-judge bench snapped at the counsel.
While counsel for husband Ravichandran sought to infer that wife Vijayasree Voora was paranoid about certain things, counsel for the wife retorted the husband was suffering from psychic problem, which prompted the court to make the remarks.
The apex court said more than legal intricacies invovled in the case what mattered was the welfare of the child, which was paramount.
"This is not a case where we should go by law. We should be concerned with the interest and welfare of the child, " the bench comprising Justices Tarun Chatterjee, R.M. Lodha and B.S. Chauhan said while deciding to pronounce its judgement on next Tuesday.
Though a US court had in 2007 directed full custodial rights to Ravichandran in the divorce dispute, Vijayasree fled the US to India and had eluded the police of three states for months.
It was only on the direction of the apex court that CBI traced the runaway mother with her son.
