Wealthy Arab Sheikhs are nodding their heads over her Bahujan Samaj Party's grand plans for their grander leader, and even as we take the brunt of a tax month, here's Mayawati being wrapped in so much money, that it had an entire nation sitting down!

But that's not all. Here's a little history lesson on the BSP's grand plans, and how they played out for Mayawati Kumari. 

The statues: 'I want to be at every traffic light in town'

During her four tenures as Chief Minister, Mayawati erected several statues of Dalit leaders Bhimrao Ambedkar, BSP founder Kanshi Ram, and yes, of herself.
Her government even approved a plan to have a police force guard the statues. These statues and the memorial parks in which they are erected are said to have cost the state a whopping Rs. 2,000 crore. Schools, civic amenities and pensions can wait.

The Taj Corridor
The Taj Corridor project was a move to upgrade tourist facilities near the Taj Mahal, implemented during her tenure as Chief Minister in 2000-2003. The BJP government at the Centre then gave the environmental clearance required for the project. But it was stalled after questions were raised not just about the environment, but also about massive embezzlement of funds meant for the project. Mayawati denies any wrongdoing. She, however did manage to stall the much-talked about project and there was even word to pass off the half-completed construction as relics to tourists!
Happy birthday to me!
Mayawati's birthdays have been major media events where she appears laden with diamonds and assorted jewellery.
In 2010, a BSP activist said he bought a lunar plot from the US-based Lunar Republic Society, for Mayawati, on her 54th birthday. He said the society openly sells plots on the moon, and presented her with the registration paper duly signed by its member-secretary Margaret Hayes Barton. The papers, however, did not show the price for the plot.

In the 2007-08 assessment year, Mayawati paid more income tax than industrialist Mukesh Ambani, to be among the richest people in the world, She was the top taxpaying politician, and ranked among the 20 top taxpayers in the country - with a massive Rs 26.26 crores as income tax.
According to Mayawati's own affidavits filed in the 2004 Lok Sabha polls and the 2007 Uttar Pradesh Legislative council polls, her financial worth jumped from 16.07 crore in 2004 to 52 crore in 2007.
In 2008, she told the IT appellate tribunal that immovable property worth Rs.6.2 million and cash payments of Rs.1.2 million were 'gifts' from supporters.
Anil Ambani thrown out of UP
The Mayawati government applied brakes on Anil Ambani's Reliance Special Economic Zone (SEZ) project in Noida by forwarded a report to the Central government specifying that 1200 acres of land for the project was not contiguous, and thus violated Government guidelines for SEZs. Anil Ambani is know to be close to Maywati's arch rival in Uttar Pradesh, Mulayam Singh Yadav and his Samajwadi Party.

In 2003, Samajwadi Party legislators presented a video cassette and a CD to the State Governor, which they claimed showed Mayawati asking her MLAs to hand over money from their annual constituency fund towards BSP's party fund. Stung by the revelation, Mayawati hit out at her political detractors and filed over 140 police cases against Mulayam Singh Yadav, accusing him of a whole range of illegalities.

Deemed University status under MHRD lens

New Delhi: After reviewing the functioning of 130 deemed universities, undergoing scrutiny for the past four months, the Human Resource Development (HRD) Ministry has taken a strict stance and has declared that many of theseinstitutions mar the status of being a "University".

"These varsities have been functioning like private limited family-run companies," said an official from the HRD Ministry.

After a thorough analysis, HRD ministry's review committee pointed out institution-wise irregularities. The final decision on these institutions, however, rests with HRD minister Mr. Kapil Sibal.

"Our work is to provide the facts sans mutation. We do not recommend action but have just highlighted some flaws that the University Grants Commission's (UGC) review report did not state," said a source.

The deemed universities, however, are already prepared with their counter remarks to the ministry's report on the basis of the clean chit they received from the UGC panel.

They are ready to face any opposition in the future upon the basis of the law, which states that a deemed status to a university is given by the ministry on UGC's recommendation only.

According to sources, precipitating UGC's stance is a strategy by a section in the ministry to divert the attention from the equation they once enjoyed together while giving the deemed status.

"The biggest blunder in the case of private deemed universities is the way in which they have established study centres all over India", says the report.

"Deemed universities of South with their study centres in North (mainly Delhi andUttar Pradesh) have many students being trained by irregular faculty. Distance education is no more an effort to bring knowledge to your home but has now outgrown into a business endeavor of minting money. All this is due to the glaring loopholes in the guideline laid down by the UGC, which flouts the parameters," said an official.

The abysmal condition in which the deemed universities in South India and UP are, do not accredit the status of being called a university, the report added.

According to an official, "The administrative and fee structures are not at all in tandem with each other. It is on this aspect that the report focuses its attention and brings out the evident irregularities."

The report draws attention upon numerous instances where non-family members were introduced as vice-chancellors, just a few days prior to making a presentation before the committee. As a matter of chance, when the committee asked them about the preceding VC, random names of promoter's relatives came out.

"It was a normal course where the family members made presentations in lieu of theuniversities," said an official.

SCOPUS, being the largest abstract and citation database of research literature and quality web sources, does not include such private deemed varsities, which shows their shoddy research output.

An official during the presentations said that many institutions do not even know about SCOPUS.

Infact, many of the government-run deemed varsities lack the transparency to function with special emphasis on their administrative structure.

Classifying the deemed varsities into three groups, the report categorizes them based on their credibility.

The first, consisting of universities with exceptional facilities, the second, withinstitutions that meet all parameters and the last, found lacking in various aspects.

The report has even censured regulatory bodies like AICTE, UGC and NCTE charging them for their lack of coordination with the deemed varsities.

CBI tortured us, helps tell NHRC

Arushi case

The counsel for Rajkumar, an accused in the Arushi-Hemraj double murder, has approached the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), saying the domestic help was "tortured" by CBI officers during the investigation.

In his complaint filed on Thursday before the NHRC, Rajkumar's lawyer Naresh Yadav alleged that the CBI "tortured" the three domestic helps — Rajkumar, Krishna and Vijay Mandal — while conducting narco-analysis tests on them in 2008 to get confessions. According to Yadav's complaint (Newsline has a copy), the three were "falsely implicated" in the case.

Yadav has given the complaint to NHRC on behalf of Rajkumar and Vijay Mandal.

He also submitted video recordings of tests conducted on the trio. "The videos show CBI officers were putting words in their mouth and torturing them to confess to the murders," Yadav told Newsline. He said the NHRC received his complaint, and he hoped for a "fair inquiry by the Commission".

Yadav has alleged in his complaint that besides torturing them, the investigating agency also kept the trio in custody illegally.

Yadav also demanded compensation for Rajkumar and Mandal for the mental and physical torture they underwent. Yadav said he filed the complaint against CBI after a TV channel recently aired footage of the narco tests of Rajkumar, Krishna and Mandal, conducted in June and July 2008.

Krishna worked as compounder with Arushi's dentist parents Rajesh and Nupur Talwar, Rajkumar worked as household help with Talwars' family friends Durranis, and Mandal was a household help in Talwars' neighbourhood.

The CBI had claimed on the basis of their narco tests that the three were involved in the murders. But all three got bail in September 2008 after the investigators failed to get any evidence against them.

While the agency had said no pressure was applied on the trio during their interrogation and tests, Rajkumar had alleged after he got bail in September 2008 that he was "physically assaulted by CBI officers and forced to confess".

Arushi Talwar was found murdered in the family's flat in Jalvayu Vihar, Sector-25 Noida, on May 16, 2008. The family's household help Hemraj's body was found on the terrace the following day.

The CBI had last month conducted narco, lie-detection, brain mapping tests on the Talwar couple at the forensic lab in Gandhinagar, Gujarat.

A new CBI team is probing the case at present but there has been no headway yet. An investigating officer from the agency today refused to comment on the issue.

Jaipur: She has studied in top Indian institutes and even has a business management degree. But instead of choosing a corporate career, Chavvi Rajawat has become a village council head in Rajasthan and "is loving it". "My desire to serve my village was the reason I fought the recent local elections," said Chavvi, who was elected a month ago as sarpanch in Soda, a small village of Tonk district 60 km from state capital Jaipur. "My grandfather Brigadier Raghubir Singh was elected sarpanch from Soda for a record three consecutive times and it was his wish that I follow in his footsteps," Chavvi said. IOC president raves about athletes' village A former student of Rishi Valley, Bangalore and Delhi's Lady Shri Ram College, Chavvi has a business management degree from Pune. But she does not miss the fast life of the city. "It is only a month since I became a sarpanch. But I am loving it. I do not have any complaints about being out of city or corporate life and devoting my time to my village," said Chavvi. "For me rural life is not new. I am quite used to it. I grew up playing with kids of farmers". Dressed in jeans and T-shirt, and fondly called "baisa" - a term of respect in the local lingo - she spends hours daily with the villagers trying to sort out their problems. "The villagers here have high hopes from me and I will not let them down," she said. "I want to see this village on a fast development track. I know water is a big problem here as it has got high fluoride content. I will try my best to solve this issue," she added. She said her other priorities are to provide electricity and get proper roads built in Soda.  Freedom fighter in Bihar leads a desolate life  "I want villagers to work for the development of the village and not to spend time looking for help from others. Villagers have got used to things not working - I have already told them about this. I have to change that. I go on surprise visits and I am very happy that now even women are taking active part in the activities," said Chavvi. "Besides spending time in village, I also help my family in running and managing a hotel we have in Jaipur," she said. Rajawat also runs E-quest, a riding academy in Jaipur. A woman of Soda village said, "Baisa spends time with us. She takes care of us and tries to sort out our problems. She helps us in taking right decisions." But Chavvi says this is how far she wants to go in politics. "I do not want to get further involved, in any capacity in politics. I just wanted to help my villagers and I feel this is the best way to make a difference," she said.

After Indians, now Canadian attacked in Australia

Toronto: After a recent spate of attacks on Indian students in Australia, it was the turn of a wheelchair-bound Canadian man who was beaten by Australian teenagers in Sydney on Tuesday, reports here said. Heath Proden, 35, from Winnipeg suffered skull fracture in the assault and is waiting for surgery in a Sydney hospital, reports said on Wednesday. Proden, who got incapacitated at the age of 10, was in Sydney to attend a concert by his friends' band called Doc Walker Tuesday night. His anxious mother Shellan Proden told the Canadian media on Wednesday that she was shocked to receive a call about the assault on her disabled son. "I was devastated. He was having such a good time there,'' she said from Winnipeg Beach where her son lived with her. Canada's Canwest News Service said Proden was waiting for a train in Sydney following the concert when he was approached and verbally harassed by two teenage boys. Proden tried to leave but he was punched in the face and knocked from his wheelchair. Video surveillance of the attack shows the teens stomped on Proden and then hit him with a metal bar they had pried from his wheelchair. They ran off but then returned and beat him some more. Also read: UK apologises to women raped by father for 25 years The agency quoted police superintendent Wayne Cox of Sydney's Mount Druitt police station as saying, "Two young men then came back on a number of occasions into the lift well where he was located. "They have taken a piece off the wheelchair and used that as a weapon and struck him several times.'' The police superintendent called the attack one of the most serious seen in the area, "particularly when you're looking at a person that's confined to a wheelchair.'' Police said a 16-year-old boy faces assault and robbery charges and a second teenage boy has surrendered to authorities.
