Make yourself more employable rather Employed in One Job

Are you a loyal, diligent, punctual, efficient worker? At one time this sounded ideal, now it barely passes muster. It’s no longer the silent, hard-working prototype of employees that recruiters are looking for these days.
Whether you’re a new graduate or an experienced hand, the competition for new jobs is growing fiercer by the day. As companies climb up the value chain and deal with international clients, aggressive, creative and task-driven workers, who can function and produce results in a team environment, top the employability list now.
Rakesh Singh, a project manager, who landed a well-paying job at a leading MNC two weeks ago, “The package that the employer is looking for is what counts the most.”
He recounts, “The only reason I got selected and 20 others did not was only because, I was successful in demonstrating the qualities that they required for the job. The key to making yourself a job magnet is to continuously strive to acquire more knowledge, skills and above all — to be a good team player.”
* 3 A’s : Attitude, Aptitude, & Ability
Bhaskar Das, vice-president, Human Resources for Cognizant Technology Solutions, feels that entry-level candidates should have the right aptitude, a can-do attitude, and the ability to work in a team environment. He says, “The ability to put the team before self is what HR managers want. Attributes such as initiative, leadership, team and communication skills are as important as the capacity to state ideas or questions clearly. One should be able to resolve disagreements in a non-confrontational manner, evaluate information and propose creative solutions, function seamlessly in multitasking situations, and track and complete tasks on time, especially under pressure.”
* Creativity’s crucial
K. Ramachandran GM –HR of Tata Consultancy Services says that employees need to be more assertive and creative these days. He affirms, “Today employees who propose solutions, take action and are innovative, have an edge over the others. This is because companies want people who are reliable and aggressive enough to finish the task given, even without the help of their supervisors.”
According to trainers, taking the right approach and having field knowledge can enable one to make a smooth entry into a new job. Ramjee Narasiman, a learning and development professional, who has done extensive employee training with leading companies like SCB, BlueDart, PepsiCo India, Kotak Mahindra, says, “It’s the in-depth knowledge, skills and most importantly the right attitude towards work which does the trick.”
