New Delhi: Air India has cancelled 76 domestic and international flights scheduled for Wednesday on its network in wake of the strike by 20,000 employees of the national carrier who are protesting against gag order, issued by the airline management, following the Mangalore air crash.
"We have cancelled a total of 76 flights scheduled to be operated on domestic as well as international sectors from Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai and Bangalore on May 26," an airline official said.
The airline has decided to cancel these flights after reviewing the situation of the availability of the executive engineers, who are not part of the employees' unions.
No flight could be operated until it is certified by an aircraft engineer. Since the number of executive engineers are less so Air India decided to cancel these 76 flights, said the official.
The national carrier has cancelled 24 of its flights from Delhi, 37 from Mumbai, six from Kolkata, seven from Chennai and two from Bangalore.
The flights that are cancelled from Delhi on Wednesday include: IC 134 to Mumbai via Bhopal-Indore, IC 409 and IC 415 to Patna, IC 411 and IC 811 to Lucknow, IC 413 and IC 813 to Kathmandu, IC 445 to Ludhiana, IC 471 to Mumbai via Jodhpur -Udaipur.
AI 480 to Singapore, AI 638 to Amritsar, AI 747 and IC 895 to Dubai, IC 817 and IC 861 to Ahmedabad, IC 821 to Jammu-Srinagar, AI 841 to Abu Dhabi, IC 849 to Pune, AI 853 to Bangkok, IC 864 to Chandigarh, IC 869 to Raipur-Nagpur, IC 885 to Muscat, IC 889 to Guawahati-Imphal and IC 896 to Jaipur.
From Mumbai three flights to Ahmedabad; six to Delhi, four to Chennai, two each to Bangalore, Goa, Hyderabad, Nagpur, Muscut and Cochin, and one each to Bangkok, Dubai, Singapore, Abu Dhabi, Kozikode, Aurangabad, Lucknow, Varanasi, Rajkot, Jamnagar, Jaipur, Raipur, Bhubaneshwar, Udaipur and Jodhpur were also cancelled.
National carrier has cancelled its six flights from Kolkata to Agartala, Bagdogra, Silchar, Dibrugarh, Imphal and Port Blair, while seven flights from Chennai to Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Mumbai, Coimbatore, Bhubaneshwar, Bangalore-Cochin, and Bangalore-Trivandrum.
Two flights from Bangalore to Mumbai and Male in Maldives were also cancelled, the official said.
On Tuesday, over 20,000 employees went on a flash strike to protest Air India's gag order that hit flight operations. Management has threatened stern action including termination of service if the agitation continued.

osaiah defends KCR arrest
Hyderabad: The Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister, Mr K. Rosaiah, on Sunday night justified the arrest of Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS), Mr K. Chandrasekhar Rao, ahead of his fast-unto-death demanding separate Telangana, saying it is the responsibility of the state government to maintain law and order.
"His (Chandrasekhar Rao) speeches and the language he is using over the last one week are not correct. We have the responsibility to maintain law and order. We waited patiently. We had to take this action only to ensure that the situation does not go out of control. In a way, this is like a preventive arrest," Mr Rosaiah said.
The way the TRS chief prepared for the fast and the tense atmosphere that built up warranted the arrest, he said.
Maintaining that Congress is not opposed to the formation of separate Telangana, he said the TRS should wait for the Congress high command to take a decision.
"Before 2004 elections, Congress and TRS had reached an understanding and entrusted the responsibility of solving the issue with Congress president Sonia Gandhi. Rao agreed for that. Congress high command is thinking on the matter. They have appointed a committee and trying for consensus. While that process is on, it is not fair to resort to extreme action.
"It is not easy for the Centre to take quick decisions on division of a state. They have to take into consideration various issues. So we cannot find fault with anyone over the delay in taking a decision at the Central level. The process of consultation is on," he said.

Jr doctors find reason to strike this year too: studying with public money and killing public lives
Hyderabad
Nov. 15: The ongoing junior doctors’ strike, demanding a steep increase in their montly stipend, is not the first in the history of the state.
Every year, the doctors go on strike following an initial difference of opinion and, later, alleged indifference shown by the state government in responding to their demands.
In 2007, trouble arose when some junior doctors were attacked by relatives of a patient and activists of a political party.
Though senior doctors resumed work after an assurance from the state government that security in hospitals would be beefed up, the junior doctors were not convinced and continued with the strike till the Essential Services Maintenance Act was invoked. The strike was called off after 12 days.
The following year, in 2008, the AP Government Doctors Association undertook a relay hunger strike in Hyderabad and other parts of the state in support of their pending demands. The junior doctors joined in.
In 2009, the junior doctors called a strike in support of their demand for a steep rise in their stipend as against their counterparts in the other states, who were being paid three-four times more.
To press their demands, seven junior doctors from different medical colleges, led by the APJUDA convenor, Dr S. Nagesh, are currently sitting on an indefinite hunger strike. On all three occasions, the Andhra Pradesh High Court has ruled that the strike must end. In the latest instance, too, a PIL has been filed in the High Court, which will be heard on Monday.
The state government has submitted a proposal of the increased stipend structure to the state Election Commission. Since the code of conduct is in vogue, in view of the GHMC elections, the state government cannot announce any other programme or scheme without the prior approval of the Election Commission.
“Once the proposal is approved, the junior doctors will get a 75 per cent hike in their stipend and a 15 per cent hike in the stipend every two years,” said Mr J. Satyanarayana, principal secretary, department of health and family welfare, Andhra Pradesh.
But the state government’s offer has not gone down well with the junior doctors.
“There was a committee formed on the direction of the High Court, which submitted its recommendations to the state government in 2008. We want a revision of the stipend based on those recommendations,” said Dr G. Raghu Kishore, treasurer of APJUDA.
Significantly, the committee, consisting of the then director of Medical Education (DME), Mr K. N. Sudha Ramani, Mr G. Sai Gopal (former DME), Registrar of NTR Health University, Prof. T. Venugopala Rao and two representatives of junior doctors, submitted its report to the state government on in December 20, 2008 with the sole purpose of finalising the stipend for interns and post-graduates.
According to the sixth recommendation submitted by the committee, “After extension of the UGC Scales, the pay scales of these members of the teaching faculty will be de-linked from the state government Pay Revision Commission (PRC) and will be linked to the UGC scales and whenever UGC pay scales and allowances are revised, such revision will automatically be implemented to these teaching faculty also.”
It further read: “The structured pay scales will consist of basic pay, annual increment and other allowances.”
Dr S. Nagesh, APJUDA convenor, said: “Once this is implemented, the issue will be sorted.”
But the medical education minister, Mr P. Sudarshan Reddy, said: “We cannot create a separate pay structure for them at par with government employees. This increase itself will put a financial burden of Rs 20-25 crore on the state annually, we cannot extend it further.” Mr Reddy said that for the release of the extra amount, too, the Chief Minister and the state finance department “had to be convinced a lot.”
