Sept. 29: The judgment in the B. Pharmacy student Ayesha Meera’s murder case left behind profound grief and agony for two mothers, belonging to poor and middle class families.

Pidatala Mariyamma, poor and physically weak woman, fainted within 10 minutes of the verdict delivered in the court on Wednesday. Mariyamma has been insisting that her son Satyambabu was innocent and did not indulge in the murder of Ayesha. But, her voiced went unnoticed either by the police or by the government. The woman has been living with her son Satyambabu and daughter Satyavati in Anasagaram village near Nandigama.

But, her life was transformed into hell with the police picking up her son in mobilephones robbery case in August 2008. Many times she alleged that police falsely implicated him in the murder case.


Finally, the court convicted him, and sentencing him for life. Ayesha Meera’s mother Shamshad Begam had undergone deep agony since December 2007 when her daughter was murdered and not been able to recover from the rude shock. She questioned why the police did not take action against the hostel management for the brutal murder of the girl on the hostel premises. She said, “I joined my daughter in the hostel with a confidence of pursuing B. Pharmacy in the local college, Ibrahimpatnam. Shamshad Begam alleged that influential Congress leader’s family members committed the heinous crime followed by rape.

She began a relentless battle to prove the guilt of the perpetrators and has been meeting the government officials, ministers, media studios and NGOs seeking justice. She, however, was disappointed with the judgment on Wednesday. “I knew the real culprits would go scot-free and innocent would be punished.”


Shamshad Begam, a resident of Tenali, admitted her daughter in the Durga Women’s Hostel in Ibrah-impatnam in 2007. Unfortunately, the girl’s life ended with brutal murder followed by rape.

Satyambabu has had an attack of G B Syndrome in 2008.

Sept. 29: The prime accused in B. Pharm student Ayesha Meera’s murder case, P. Satyambabu, was given life imprisonment. “He is innocent and has been implicated in the case,” said Satyambabu’s mother Mariyamma, who fainted after hearing the verdict.

Several hundred activists of Dalit organisations and representatives of civil society associations also gathered at the court premises and shouted slogans against the judgment terming it flawed. Satyambabu was brought to the court in a wheel chair in the morning amidst tight security.


The 23-year-old is suffering from GB Syndrome, which has paralysed his legs and affected his nervous system. He is being treated in NIMS, Hyderabad, for the last one year. Earlier, the additional public prosecutor, Ms G. Uma, said the convict deserved the capital punishment since he raped the girl after the murder.

The judge, who pronounced the youth guilty, took a three hour break before announcing the sentence. Satyambabu was picked up by the police on August 17, 2008, in Anasagaram village of Nandigama mandal for stealing mobile phones. The police claimed that during the course of interrogation, he confessed to murdering Ayesha Meera.
Sleuths collected fingerprints, DNA samples, papers with the handwriting of Satyambabu and circumstantial evidence and produced it in the court. More than 34 witnesses were examined. Ibrahimpatnam police had earlier arrested one Gurvinder Singh alias Laddu of Vijayawada suspecting his involvement in the murder. However, police later dropped the case against him because of the hue and cry raised by civil society organisations.






“Today’s verdict has pained the mother of Ayesha Meera as well as the mother of Satyambabu,” said the advocate, Ms V.V.N. Rajya Lakshmi. “Such verdicts will damage the credibility of the judiciary.” She added that the forensic report in the case was issued by an official who was caught by the anti-corruption bureau while accepting bribe in Hyderabad very recently.










“Police presented fabricated evidence to punish the innocent and save the culprits,” she said. The defence lawyer, Mr P Srinivas, said he would appeal in the High Court against the judgment.










Meanwhile, representatives of Mala Mahanadu, OPDR, Sree Vimukthi, PDSU, PDSO, Mala Sankshema Sangham, Rytu Coolie Sangham and Andhra Pradesh Mahila Samaakhya present at the court premises shouted slogans criticising the verdict. A Dalit activist B. Rama Prasad also climbed the gate of the court main gate and closed it to express his protest. “A poor Dalit has been implicated in the case while the real culprits have escaped,” he said.

The statues: 'I want to be at every traffic light in town'

During her four tenures as Chief Minister, Mayawati erected several statues of Dalit leaders Bhimrao Ambedkar, BSP founder Kanshi Ram, and yes, of herself.
Her government even approved a plan to have a police force guard the statues. These statues and the memorial parks in which they are erected are said to have cost the state a whopping Rs. 2,000 crore. Schools, civic amenities and pensions can wait.

The Taj Corridor
The Taj Corridor project was a move to upgrade tourist facilities near the Taj Mahal, implemented during her tenure as Chief Minister in 2000-2003. The BJP government at the Centre then gave the environmental clearance required for the project. But it was stalled after questions were raised not just about the environment, but also about massive embezzlement of funds meant for the project. Mayawati denies any wrongdoing. She, however did manage to stall the much-talked about project and there was even word to pass off the half-completed construction as relics to tourists!

Mayawati's birthdays have been major media events where she appears laden with diamonds and assorted jewellery.
In 2010, a BSP activist said he bought a lunar plot from the US-based Lunar Republic Society, for Mayawati, on her 54th birthday. He said the society openly sells plots on the moon, and presented her with the registration paper duly signed by its member-secretary Margaret Hayes Barton. The papers, however, did not show the price for the plot.

MP Dalit boy set on fire: India stil to get Independence for Dalits

A 12-year-old Dalit boy was set on fire by four people in Madhya Pradesh's Vidisha district over reported family rivalry, police said on Monday. The child is said to be in a critical condition.

The incident took place Sunday evening in Madiyakala village in Vidisha when four people beat up the boy, Maharaj Singh, sprinkled kerosene on him and then set him on fire.

He was admitted to the district hospital where his condition is said to be critical.

The accused have been identified as Raju Khangar, Prakash Khangar, Pradeep Maina and Ramkaran Maina and they reportedly had a long-standing dispute with the victim's father Bharat Singh Ahirwar, said superintendent of police (Vidisha) I.S. Sansanwal.

The police have registered a case against the accused who are absconding.

"We have sent teams to different locations to arrest them," the police official said.

Mumbai NGO to train male sex workers in vocational courses

Mumbai: Trying to earn their self-respect back, over 50 male sex workers in the city will be undergoing training in vocational courses held by an NGO, in order to quit prostitution.

The city-based NGO Sambhavana, which has been working for the welfare of over 9,000 male sex workers registered with it, will soon be training these workers in mobile repair, electronic appliance repair and plumbing.

"Most of these men come to Mumbai in search of jobs but end up in sex trade. We are trying to help them earn a better living," convener of the NGO, Jasmir Thakur told PTI.

Twenty seven-year-old Omprakash, has spent nearly 12 years in Mumbai working as a Masseur, a garb under which thousands of male sex workers work in the city. He is one of the persons who has registered for the vocational courses.

"My parents in Mathura do not know what I do here. The job pays well and my family is happy with the money I send them everyweek," Omprakash said.

But I am scared I will one day get infected with some disease and want to leave this job at the earliest, he said, adding, "I want to earn my self respect back."

According to a study conducted by the NGO, almost 17 per cent of the male sex workers in the city are HIV positive.

"It is alarming to see boys as young as 15 years come to Mumbai in search of decent jobs and then being dragged into prostitution," Jamir said.

"We realised even if we counsel these boys to quit the profession, they need an alternative as they are mostly school drop outs," he added. — PTI
