Lakhs of families left homeless

Oct. 4: Floods have economically ruined over one lakh families in the state. While many lost their life-long savings, others are not in a position to repair their houses.
Cash, clothes, utensils and other household articles were washed away in the floods. Self-employed petty businessmen are the worst hit as their shops were completely inundated in Mantralayam. Farmers, who invested up to Rs 50,000 for farming, lost their standing crops.
“We have become orphans. Though flood water is receding, many of us are unable to go back to homes which are in a dilapidated condition.
At the same time, we can’t stay in relief camps as there is no food and drinking water,” said M. Sreeram , a resident of Kurnool.
“The government may give us Rs 10,000 or Rs 20,000 as relief. But it is not sufficient as we have lost property worth over Rs 5 lakh,” said Mr Raghuvardhan Reddy from Mahbubnagar district.
“Unfortunately, we are not in a position to seek help from friends and relatives since they are also badly affected. We have to come to Hyderabad in search of livelihood as everything was shattered in the villages,” he added. Telugu Desam leaders said the Central assistance is need of the hour.
