Congress party Men and ministers joins Jagan

Independent Media

The Congress high command has warned Cabinet ministers in the state against participating in the Kadapa MP, Mr Jagan Mohan Reddy’s Odarpu yatra.

Mr Ahmed Patel, the political secretary to the Congress president, Mrs Sonia Gandhi, sent word to all the ministers telling them that any one of them violating the diktat will be doing so at his or her own risk and indicating that they were likely to lose their jobs.

However, at least three ministers, two from East Godavari where Mr Reddy’s yatra is going on, have stated that they will participate in it whenever it reaches their native constituencies.

In a clear act of defiance, the minister for BC welfare, Mr Pilli Subhash Chandra Bose, on Friday night participated in Mr Reddy’s tour from Samalkot in the district that falls under Peddapuram Assembly segment

.

A close relative of Mr Reddy, the mines minister, Mr Balineni Srinivasulu Reddy, had on Thursday announced that he would accompany Mr Reddy on his Odarpu yatra in Prakasam district in August.

Talking to this correspondent on Friday, some ministers have confirmed the latest diktat from the party high command.

When the defiant attitude of some ministers was brought to Mr Patel’s notice on Thursday, he reportedly expressed anger and immediately sent word to the ministers telling them that their participation in the yatra would be viewed seriously.

Though for the record, the Rajahmundry MP and senior leader of the party, Mr Undavalli Arun Kumar, who paid a courtesy visit to Mr Reddy two days ago denied reports that he was snubbed by the party high command, sources said the inside story was totally different. Mr Patel had telephoned Mr Arun Kumar and chided him for his participation.

According to sources, the high command felt that if it reined in the ministers a message will also go out to MLAs that those who associate themselves with Mr Reddy will not be favoured

YSR Loyalist: Mareppa castigates leaders

Independent Media

The Congress leader and former minister, Mr M. Mareppa, castigated the party senior leaders for making critical remarks against the ongoing Odarpu Yatra being taken out by the Congress MP, Mr Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy, and cautioned them not to unleash their tongues only to impress the Congress high command. the Former minister who arrived here to visit the ailing former minister, Mr Jakkampudi Ramamohan Rao, on Tuesday challenged the senior leaders to contest in the elections successfully without carrying the portrait of former chief minister Y.S. Rajasekhar Reddy and also without mentioning several welfare schemes initiated by him.
Mr Mareppa said, “Several senior leaders of the Congress party who failed even to get elected as corporators are causing a lot of damage to the party image with their unsavoury remarks against Mr Jagan Mohan Reddy. The Congress MP from Kadapa made political comments only when he was provoked by the senior leaders during his tour at Srikakulam. These leaders are apprehensive about their very existence in the party if the Congress MP gets power into his hands. They should be expelled from the party. I am going to New Delhi to explain about these developments to the party high command soon.”
Speaking about the party matters, he expressed ang-uish over the way the social justice in the party was being given a raw deal and said that there was no proper representation for the people belonging to Madiga community in the party.
He alleged that only those ‘waste’ leaders having cash and caste were being given prominent posts in the party. He said that only those leaders who could fight for their rights become victorious and added Mr Jagan Mohan Reddy was adopting the same path. He ruled out any need for the Congress MP to move out of the Congress.

Recalling how the Congress party was brought back to power by the late chief minister Y.S. Rajasekhar Reddy in 2004 elections in the state and led the party to victory again in 2009 polls, Mr Mareppa was critical against the honour given to the Telugu Desam founder president N.T. Rama Rao’s daughter Ms D. Purandareswari by accommodating her in the Union Cabinet while creating several hurdles for Rajasekhar Reddy’s son to take up Odarpu yatra.

Referring to the Congress senior leader, Mr V. Hanumantha Rao’s remarks that Mr Jagan was mobilising people for his tour, Mr M. Mareppa said that there was no such need for the MP and said that in case Mr Hanumantha Rao intended to hold a public meeting, his own family members would not attend it.

He turned his ire against the PCC president, Mr D. Srinivas, the Congress MP, Mr Madhu Yashki and party senior leader, Mr V. Hanumantha Rao, stating that though they claimed to be the leaders of the BCs, they did nothing to improve the lot of backward class community.

Reacting on the remarks of Jagan’s family properties, he called for nationalisation of the properties of all those who were speaking on the issue and said that if all the leaders pay their income tax, the country would witness development.

Mr Mareppa also described the Congress MPs and MLAs as cowards for failing to take part in Odarpu yatra

Centre proposes Unified Command to fight Naxals

Independent Media

In a bid to give a sharp edge to anti-Naxal operations, the Union government on Wednesday asked Chhattisgarh, Orissa, Jharkhand and West Bengal, worst affected by Maoist violence, to set up a Unified Command to carry out anti-Naxal operations.

Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram told reporters after a meeting of Chief Ministers of the Naxal-affected States that the proposed Unified Command would be headed by the four States' Chief Secretaries,

The meeting was chaired by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

The Unified Command will have a retired Major General as a member. The four States were asked to appoint an Inspector-General-rank police officer to take care of anti-Naxal operations; and appoint an IG (CRPF) as IG (Operations) for that State to work in close coordination with IG (Anti-Naxal operations) of that State.

Assam and Jammu and Kashmir have Unified Commands in place, headed by respective Chief Ministers.

The Centre also offered more helicopters, logistical support and intelligence sharing to the States to fight the Maoist menace. It sanctioned about 16,000 additional Special Police Officers, taking the total number of such posts to about 30,000. It also decided to fund the establishment or strengthening of 400 police stations in the affected districts at the rate of Rs. 2 crore a police station on 80:20 basis over two years.

The States were asked to set up an empowered group, chaired by Member-Secretary, Planning Commission, to modify the norms and guidelines to implement development schemes having regard to the local needs and conditions in the affected districts. It was decided to improve road connectivity in 34 worst affected districts. A number of roads and bridges are proposed to be included at a cost of Rs. 950 crore by the Road Transport and Highways Ministry.

The Chief Ministers were told that the Planning Commission was considering a Special Development Plan for the affected districts with focus on primary education, healthcare, drinking water and road connectivity.

“Consultations have been held with the State governments and it is expected that the plan will be placed before the National Development Council shortly for approval,'' the Home Minister said. “There was complete unanimity on the Centre's approach of development and police action. All the Chief Ministers and the Governor were positive in their approach, fully cooperative and committed to work together to deal with the Maoist menace. In medium to long term, we can overcome the challenge of left wing extremism.''

The decisions were taken in the light of experience gained in the last six months, Mr. Chidambaram said.

The meeting was attended by Chief Ministers of Chhattisgarh, Orissa, Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, and Maharashtra, West Bengal Health Minister and Jharkhand Governor. Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee and Defence Minister A. K. Antony were also present.

MLAs to defy orders, intend to join Jagan

Independent Media

Hyderabad July 13 : Some Congress MLAs from Srikakulam and a major group from East Godavari have decided to participate in Kadapa MP Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy’s ongoing Odarpu yatra.

The Srikakulam MLAs have already instructed their followers to participate in the yatra. Enthused by the response from the people, Mr Jagan has extended his yatra in the district by a day

Mr Jagan began taking on the State Congress leaders during the second day of his yatra. With crowds continuing to throng his roadshows, Mr Jagan said the state politics had touched its lowest level after the death of his father nine months ago.

The day also witnessed the presence of important leaders like the former minister, Mr Konathala Ramakrishna, a close of friend of Mr Jagan, at the yatra. The Srikakulam MP, Ms Killi Kriparani, and the minister, Mr Dharamana Prasada Rao’s son invited him for tea.

The Srikakulam legislators are now in Hyderabad for the Assembly session and have decided to join the yatra from Saturday. The two-day holiday for the session has given them a reason to visit their constituencies where Mr Jagan is touring.

On Friday in the Assembly lobby, the Srikakulam MLAs discussed their participation in the yatra. Their contention was that if they don’t go, their rivals within the party would take advantage of their absence. The government whip, Mr Kondru Murali, is reported to have met the Chief Minister, Mr K. Rosaiah, and sought his permission to participate in the yatra.

When the Chief Minister reminded him that the yatra did not have sanction from the leadership, Mr Murali reportedly told him that it would not be possible for him to remain in the capital when other groups in the constituency were joining in the yatra. He told the CM that he would have to go.

In the evening, Congress legislators from East Godavari discussed their participation in the yatra from July 11 to 20. The minister, Mr Pilli Subhash Chandra Bose, who was a close follower of late Y.S. Rajasekhar Reddy, apparently told them that even at the cost of losing his job he would attend the tour in East Godavari district.

When the panchayati raj minister, Mr Botsa Satyanarayana, met Mr Bose and conveyed the feelings of the high command and the Chief Minister, the latter told him he cannot avoid going on the tour.

Some MLAs said Mr Jagan should have praised the Congress president, Mrs Sonia Gandhi, during the yatra so that party leaders participating in the tour would not face a problem.

According to sources, Mr Jagan will tour nearly 1,100 kilometres, covering nearly 370 villages in 60 mandals of the district to console the 75 identified families, the kin of those who had committed suicide or died of shock, in the aftermath of his father’s tragic death in copter crash in September last year.

According to East Godavari Youth Congress president, Mr Varupula Raja, Jagan’s Odarpu Yatra is confirmed to begin on Monday and he will enter the district this night after completing the ongoing programme in Srikakulam district by Sunday evening. Besides consoling the families, Mr Jagan will also inaugurate YSR’s statues at various places during the yatra, he added.
Speaking to this correspondent, the superintendent of police, Mr G. Srinivas said that tight security was pressed into service to prevent untoward incidents, and their department had also given strict instructions to the programme organisers not to conduct any public campaigns or meetings during the yatra

Turn TV off for kids to eat healthy

Independent Media

If your children are demanding French fries, candy and cola, it could have a lot to do with TV shows they watch. A study by television channel What's On India found that processed foods advertisements are flooding children's channels.

Another study by the Diabetes Foundation of India found such ads boost demand by up to 54 per cent among their audiences, raising incidences of childhood obesity and early onset diabetes. Prime time (4 pm to 6 pm) animated shows on Hungama, Nickelodeon, Disney and Pogo air the most such ads, according to the study, which was based on data from Television Audience Measurement (TAM).

These channels aired a total of 44,887 processed food ads in April alone. HT independently verified the data with TAM. "Children who are bombarded with such marketing messages demand processed foods, which can lead to lethargy, diabetes and obesity," said nutritionist Hira Mahajan.

Added psychiatrist Varkha Chulani: "Kids are easy targets. You get a popular celebrity or a dancing cartoon to gobble unhealthy food and kids are bound to demand it

Release psychic 'Octopus Paul': PETA

Independent Media

Berlin, July 10(ANI): Animal rights group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) is demanding the release of Paul, the psychic octopus, who has become a global star for his World Cup predictions.

PETA spokesman Bruce Friedrich said that they were urging people to sign an online petition demanding Paul's release.

"No animal deserves to be confined to a tiny tank and we're hoping that Paul's popularity, or in Germany notoriety, will cause people to think a little bit more about the inner lives of octopuses," News.com.au quoted Friedrich, as saying.

The move comes after death threats from German fans, who have said that they want Paul fried or turned into a paella for betraying the country by correctly guessing Spain's victory over Germany last week.

Paul, from Aquarium Sea Life Centre in Oberhausen, Germany, had predicted the outcome of all six of Germany's matches by choosing to eat food from boxes adorned with the flags of Germany and its rivals.

Meanwhile, the eight-legged oracle has predicted that Spain will win the World Cup final, and Germany will emerge victorious in the battle for third place over Uruguay. (ANI)

Iniesta delivers blow in Spanish triumph

Independent Media

JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) - Spain midfielder Andres Iniesta's nerveless finish in extra time delivered a knockout blow to Netherlands in a bruising final to clinch a 1-0 win and their first World Cup triumph at the first African finals.

With a shootout looming, the peerless Iniesta controlled a ball from substitute Cesc Fabregas four minutes from time and found the coolness that had eluded forwards on both sides to fire the ball past the helpless Maarten Stekelenburg.

The Dutch, who ran fuming to referee Howard Webb convinced the goal was illegal on at least two counts, were already down to 10 men following John Heitinga's red card seven minutes earlier and there was little realistic hope of a comeback.

Spain succeeded in keeping their opponents at arm's length and their players wept with joy as they celebrated becoming the first European team to win the World Cup on another continent and the first to triumph after losing their opening game.

"Euphoria, joy, everything positive," Spain midfielder Xabi Alonso told reporters. "The only thing that counts in finals is to win them."

There followed a firework celebration but the soccer itself had fizzled rather than sparkled as Spain became the lowest scoring team to win the World Cup.

They managed only eight goals in their seven games -- three fewer than the previous lowest total in a winning campaign.

For the Dutch, who knocked Spain out of their cultured stride for long periods and should have taken the lead with one glorious chance for Arjen Robben in the second half of normal time, defeat was an all too familiar disappointment.

While Spain were triumphant in their first final, the Dutch have now lost three, following defeats in 1974 and 1978.

BRUTAL TACKLING

The Dutch tactic on Sunday was clearly to frustrate the superior Spanish midfield with some brutal tackling.

There were 13 yellow cards as well as the red, eight of the cautions for the Dutch and five for Spain, who got dragged into a street fight in front of a raucous crowd when they would have preferred a more gentlemanly contest.

So a match billed as one for the purists turned out to be anything but -- it was tense, bad-tempered and had little of the skill the two technically accomplished sides had demonstrated throughout the tournament.

Spain briefly showed some of the precision passing and artful movement that made them such worthy European champions two years ago, Xavi, Iniesta and forward David Villa combining effortlessly in what was a nightmare start for every Dutch fan.

The standard was soon a distant memory, though, as the rest of the first half degenerated into an ugly affair.

Bert van Marwijk's Netherlands side had chances to take the lead, notably when Robben cut in and tested Spain's captain and goalkeeper Iker Casillas with a low shot to his near post.

Robben missed a better chance from Wesley Sneijder's precise pass, Casillas saving with a foot, and the winger appeared to be manhandled by Carles Puyol when racing through again.

Robben stayed on his feet when he might have gone down. Center-back Puyol, already yellow-carded, escaped what might easily have been a sending-off and Spain breathed again.

MORE DANGEROUS

The Spaniards had been creating a few problems themselves following the introduction of Jesus Navas for Pedro after an hour and they looked even more dangerous once Fabregas replaced Xabi Alonso toward the end of normal time.

However, Fabregas missed a great chance to put Spain ahead when Stekelenburg made a vital save in an echo of Robben's earlier miss before central defender Heitinga's sending off finally tilted the game Spain's way late in extra time.

With forwards on both sides failing to deal with the intense pressure, it was almost inevitable that it would fall to a midfielder or defender to break the deadlock.

Iniesta, a candidate for player of the tournament, found the calm head and dead aim required to settle the match.

The Dutch were angry there had been no offside call and could not understand why a deflected free kick moments earlier had not resulted in a corner in their favor.

English referee Webb waved away their claims and was booed by the huge orange-clad contingent in the crowd, scarcely able to believe they had come so near and yet so far once again.

"That decision should have been a corner for us," said Netherlands midfielder Nigel de Jong. "The goal resulted from the next attack. That's football. We're very disappointed."

Victory sees Spain join Brazil (five times winners), Italy (four), Germany (three), Uruguay (two), Argentina (two), England and France as world champions and they are only the third side to hold the European Championship at the same time.

They were not able to produce the metronomic passing of previous performances but that scarcely matters to the millions of fans back home who were ecstatic that their team of talents had finally made an indelible mark on the World Cup.

'Milenge Milenge' is regressive

Independent Media

Cast: Shahid Kapoor, Kareena Kapoor
Director: Satish Kaushik

To be fair, 'Milenge Milenge' delivers exactly what you expect from it. Five years in the making and ultimately assembled out of incomplete footage, this Satish Kaushik-directed romantic drama is regressive, senseless, and packed with plot-holes the size of craters.

Priya (played by Kareena Kapoor) thinks she's met the man of her dreams when she runs into the too-good-to-be-true Immy (played by Shahid Kapoor) at a college youth festival in Bangkok. Turns out the fellow's been fooling her all along. When she breaks up with him, he realizes he's fallen for her, and begs her for another chance.

In a premise plagiarized shamelessly from the John Cusack-Kate Beckinsale starrer Serendipity, Priya leaves it to destiny to decide if they're meant to be together. She asks Immy to scribble his number on a currency note, which she uses to buy a numerology book from a nearby newsstand. On the inside cover of the book she jots down her own number and tells him she'll send it to a second-hand bookstore the following day. If the 50 rupee note with his number reaches her, or the book with her number finds its way to him, that'll be a sign from fate that they're meant to be together. If not, they'll have no way to contact each other again.

As far-fetched the concept of Serendipity may have been, it was convincing because the characters met and separated the same day; they didn't know each other's friends or their last names even. In Milenge Milenge, director Satish Kaushik gives the leads that whole Bangkok back-story before they are separated. And then expects us to believe that they can't track each other down when they have interacted over days, met each other's friends, and even know that they live in the same city!

The problem with this film is that it's lacking in basic logic, and that its characters are complete stereotypes. Add to that the fact that Kaushik's treatment is extremely outdated even for a film that wasmeant to be released five years ago.

Shahid Kapoor and Kareena Kapoor are perky enough, but Milenge Milenge doesn't exactly call upon them to deliver performances of any kind. You might be willing to overlook Kareena's varying hairstyles in every other scene, but what's unforgivable is the film's predictable narrative.

I'm going with one-and-a-half out of five for director Satish Kaushik's Milenge Milenge. If you're thinking of checking it out for Shahid and Kareena's chemistry after Jab We Met, I might have a word of advice for you - Don't!
