Lok Sabha row over phone tapping, price rise

The Lok Sabha was adjourned for the second time on Tuesday, till 2 pm, amid uproar from the Opposition benches. BJP members protested against Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's refusal to set up a joint parliamentary committee (JPC) on phone tapping, and Samajwadi Party and RJD members protested on the price rise issue. The Rajya Sabha has been adjourned for the day. The Lok Sabha reconvened after adjournment at noon, only to have slogan-shouting members gather in the Well as the government laid papers on the table of the House. The House was adjourned soon after. In the morning, as proceedings began and Speaker Meira Kumar completed the obituary references, Opposition members were on their feet in protest against the government's stand on phone tapping and price rise. Leader of Opposition Sushma Swaraj said she was surprised to see reports in newspapers quoting the Prime Minister as saying there would be no JPC to investigate the phone tapping issue. "This is a disrespect of the House. The Prime Minister should give a statement in the House on the issue," she said. She insisted this was a serious matter as phones of even cabinet ministers were tapped. BJP has also demanded Joint Parliamentary Committee probe into IPL scam and phone tapping. Parliamentary Affairs Minister P K Bansal and his deputy V Narayanasamy accused Swaraj of making "baseless" allegations. SP members Dharmendra Yadav and Shailendra Kumar showed placards which said "Bharat Bandh against the government which has failed to control prices has been successful". Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav led the protest. RJD members, led by party chief Lalu Prasad and Raghuvansh Prasad Singh, shouted slogans against the government. They walked into the Well and shouted slogans like "Yeh sarkar nikkami hai. Jo sarkar nikkami hai, woh sarkar badalni hai" (this government is ineffective and has to be changed) and "Yeh to abhi angadai hai, aage abhi ladai hai" (This is just the beginning, the struggle lies ahead). A general strike has been called today by 13 non-NDA and non-UPA parties. After 10 minutes of uproar, the House was adjourned by the Speaker till 12 noon. Rajya Sabha adjourned till tomorrow Opposition BJP, SP and Left parties on Tuesday forced adjournment of the Rajya Sabha for the day without transacting any business over rise in prices of essential commodities and IPL controversy. Soon after the House met, almost the entire Opposition was on its feet. The SP, RJD and Left parties, which have given call for a nation-wide strike in protest against price rise, raised the issue of increase in cost of essential commodities, while BJP members were on their feet demanding a JPC to go into the IPL affairs. Chairman Hamid Ansari asked members to resume their seats and let the Question Hour to proceed. "This is unbecoming (of members)," he said when members raised slogans. "Mr Kamal Akhtar (SP) you are coming to notice. Don't raise slogans," he observed even as the din continued. Minutes into the pandemonium, Ansari adjourned the House till tomorrow.

Andhra govt wants schools to drop fancy tags

If it was the "International" tag that made you pick your children's school in Andhra Pradesh, please begin looking for more reasons to keep them there. For the Andhra Pradesh government wants schools to have simple names and drop misleading tags like "International", "World", "Global" or even "Techno," which hold out the promise of global standards in school education, but may not provide it. Armed with the Right to Education Act, that frowns upon such names, the state government now wants names of schools to only indicate the level at which the school offers an education. The government's argument is that such names are only a ploy to charge higher fees. The Andhra School Education Minister, M.Varaprasad, says, "They have to follow many norms but we find even ordinary schools calling themselves international schools.'' Parents flock to these schools looking for that international edge, but as educationist Isidore Philips points out, "A fancy title would mean your marketability increases, but has it translated into the school becoming really world class? These terms of world class, global, international, techno, concept all need a definition and I think to that extent, the government saying please do not use that is a step in the right direction.'' Corporate schools do not agree. They say the government should not harass schools with genuine international affiliations. According to B Gavish Reddy, Director, Niraj International School: "The schools which are genuine, which are affiliating with foreign bodies, foreign universities and education institutions definitely must be permitted to use the word International.'' Such corporate schools are likely to go to court if the government insists that they drop their fancy tags.

Modi to be stripped off his security cover?

A day after Lalit Modi was shown the door by the BCCI, he is all set to lose his security cover too. If reports are to be believed, Modi's security cavalcade will be a thing of the past. Mumbai police officials are considering withdrawing his police protection, which incidentally he had been getting for free for the past year. A senior police officer confirmed the move, saying, "We are awaiting the reports from the local police station, Crime Branch and Special Branch on threat perception to Modi and his family. If the report is negative, we will immediately pull out the policemen provided for his security." Free of cost Modi had been given police protection free of cost, thanks to a powerful neta, who apparently made a phone call to a senior cop, asking that Modi and his family be provided security. Five cops were immediately sent to give day-night protection to Modi and his family. For the past two months, this number has increased to 10. The estimated cost of this protection works out to almost Rs 15 lakh (at the rate of Rs 600 per constable per day, for a year). MiD DAY had reported about police security for Modi on April 2, 2009 'Lalit Modi and family live under threat'. Police officials attached to the protection branch admitted to receiving verbal instructions initially on Modi's security cover and subsequently provided him with two armed constables (one on each shift). His wife and children were entitled to one constable each for 12 hours. Cop cover The number of policemen was gradually increased after Modi wrote a letter to Mumbai Police Commissioner D Shiva-Nandan on March 2, 2010 (a copy of which is with MiD DAY), in which he thanks the police department for doubling his security and also asks for more protection for his family. Accordingly, a few days later the protection department doubled the manpower for Modi and his family. Modi was provided 2+2 (two constables in day and two at night) armed with carbines and his family was provided with one constable each (12-hr shift) for 24 hours. "Even if Modi stayed out of Mumbai or India during the above period, he was still under the police cover and officials from protection branch were in constant touch with his personal security guards, knowing his movements and details," said a police officer. Advocate M P Vashi, who had earlier filed a PIL in the Bombay High Court on unwanted police protection given to political leaders, said, "The police should not have wasted 10 of their men for Modi and his family. They do not deserve such treatment. They enjoy such luxury for free only due to their nexus with certain political leaders."

The statues: 'I want to be at every traffic light in town'

During her four tenures as Chief Minister, Mayawati erected several statues of Dalit leaders Bhimrao Ambedkar, BSP founder Kanshi Ram, and yes, of herself.
Her government even approved a plan to have a police force guard the statues. These statues and the memorial parks in which they are erected are said to have cost the state a whopping Rs. 2,000 crore. Schools, civic amenities and pensions can wait.

The Taj Corridor
The Taj Corridor project was a move to upgrade tourist facilities near the Taj Mahal, implemented during her tenure as Chief Minister in 2000-2003. The BJP government at the Centre then gave the environmental clearance required for the project. But it was stalled after questions were raised not just about the environment, but also about massive embezzlement of funds meant for the project. Mayawati denies any wrongdoing. She, however did manage to stall the much-talked about project and there was even word to pass off the half-completed construction as relics to tourists!

Mayawati's birthdays have been major media events where she appears laden with diamonds and assorted jewellery.
In 2010, a BSP activist said he bought a lunar plot from the US-based Lunar Republic Society, for Mayawati, on her 54th birthday. He said the society openly sells plots on the moon, and presented her with the registration paper duly signed by its member-secretary Margaret Hayes Barton. The papers, however, did not show the price for the plot.

The Mayawati government applied brakes on Anil Ambani's Reliance Special Economic Zone (SEZ) project in Noida by forwarded a report to the Central government specifying that 1200 acres of land for the project was not contiguous, and thus violated Government guidelines for SEZs. Anil Ambani is know to be close to Maywati's arch rival in Uttar Pradesh, Mulayam Singh Yadav and his Samajwadi Party.

Vindi' Banga bids adieu to Unilever

Manvinder Singh Banga, president (global foods, home & personal care) at Unilever Plc, has called it a day after 33 years with the FMCG major. He will leave by the end of May. It is unclear, however, where the London-based executive is headed to. 

Better known as Vindi, Banga is also member of the company's executive board called Unilever Executive. He will be replaced by Michael B Polk, who is currently president (Americas) at Unilever, according to a press statement.
HUL: Volume growth returns 
Polk, in turn, will be replaced by Dave Lewis, who is currently vice-president of Unilever, the UK and Ireland. He will join the Unilever Executive.
Banga, an IIT-IIM alumnus, began his innings with the FMCG company in India. He became chairman & managing director of Hindustan Lever Ltd (HLL), as it was called, in 2000, subsequently moving to Singapore in 2004 as president, home & personal care, Asia. He joined the Unilever Executive in 2005 as president (foods), creating the foods category organisation.
HUL to pay brand royalty to parent 
In 2008, he was given additional charge of the home & personal care categories, which allowed him to create a single Unilever global foods, home & personal care category organisation. This organisation is responsible for innovation and marketing mix development across brands.
In India, too, Banga did something similar during his tenure as chairman and managing director. He implemented the Unilever Power Brand strategy, attempting to trim the Indian subsidiary's vast portfolio of brands, focusing instead on a few high performers. This strategy met with mixed success.
"I have thoroughly enjoyed every moment of my time at Unilever, especially the last few years, during which we have transformed the company. Our global category organisation is a real powerhouse that combines global brand and technology scale with local knowledge and execution," Banga said about his tenure with Unilever in a written statement.
Paul Polman, chief executive officer, Unilever, said, "Vindi is a great leader and has had a very successful career with the company. He was responsible for a significant improvement in our innovation results, delivering bigger ideas with global scale. He will be greatly missed."

Mumbai: Upset over being ignored by BJP president Nitin Gadkari, actor-turned-MP Shatrughan Sinha on Thursday  became the first party leader to publicly criticise the composition of the new team of office bearers, saying it was "new wine in old bottle". While there have been reports of unease among some leaders, Sinha was forthcoming in an interview to PTI claiming some of the "most deserving" people have been left out in the much-awaited team announced on Tuesday. The 'Bihari Babu' dubbed Gadkari's team, touted by the party as an effective blend of youth, experience and women, as "new wine in old bottle and, if we include bodies like the party's parliamentary board, old wine in old bottle".  Hema Malini, Varun among BJP’s new office-bearers Without naming anyone, he said some of those inducted could have been avoided. For the record, Sinha refuted suggestions that he was a contender for any post. He felt that senior leader and former union minister Yashwant Sinha should have been included with an eye on Bihar assembly elections due in October this year. Yashwant Sinha, a former leader of opposition in the Bihar assembly, has held key portfolios at the centre including those of Finance and External Affairs. "Bihar assembly polls are most crucial for the party in the near future, yet a leader of the calibre of Yashwant Sinha has been kept out of the team. Some of the people who could have been avoided have been taken at the cost of some of the most deserving people," he said. "I have always treated Gadkari like a younger brother and friend. Nevertheless, the composition of the new team, personally speaking, is unfortunate and I am quite unhappy."  Bad floor management a UPA trait: BJP Sinha claimed that the team was constituted without consulting "people who matter like my friend and Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha Sushma Swaraj and some other top leaders". "Being a senior and matured leader, I do not want to break party discipline by making any undesirable comments but I am certainly worried and to a certain extent unhappy with the composition of the team," he said and went on to add that "most partymen are unhappy but there is time and we will wait and watch." Party insiders said Sinha was unhappy over the appointment as general secretary of Ravishankar Prasad, a fellow Bihari and Kayastha casteman. Sinha, one of the star campaigners for the party in the past several assembly and parliamentary elections, wanted a greater role for himself in the Bihar polls, sources said.

Many of his followers felt cheated after Swami Nityananda's intimate moments with a south Indian actress were telecast by a Tamil TV channel.

Subsequently, Nityananda's ashrams in Tamil Nadu and Karnataka were set on fire.

Both the swami and the actress went missing after the footage was telecast.

The ashram claimed that the spiritual guru was in Haridwar attending the Kumba Mela.

Later, in an interview to a TV channel, the swami said that the actress had been his devotee for a very long time.

He said his personal life was misinterpreted. He claimed that a part of the video has his presence but later on it is morphed.

Godmen run not only ashrams, but brothels too!The Delhi police busted a sex - racket run allegedly by a godman named Shiv Murat Dwivedi.
Dwivedi, 39, was arrested with his aides and six women, two of whom are airhostesses.
Police said that Dwivedi had set up a temple in the Khanpur area of Delhi and ran the racket from there.
Police said that a TV actress was also actively involved in the racket.
Dwivedi, also known as Ichchadhari Sant Swami Bhimanandji Maharaj Chitrakootwale, was planning to make as much money as he could till the Commonwealth Games were over and then flee the country.

Swami Premananda is another controversial spiritual guru from Tamil Nadu. In December 2002, the Madras High Court confirmed a lower court's order sentencing Swami Premananda, and his secretary, Kamalananda, to double life imprisonment.The charge against Premananda was that he raped young girls in his ashram near Tiruchirapalli and forced those who became pregnant to go for abortions.
He was convicted for 13 rapes and a murder in his ashram. He murdered an engineer named Ravi who had tried to expose him.

Dera Sacha Sauda chief Baba Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh was accused of sexually assaulting women followers of the Dera at the sect's Sirsa-based headquarters.The CBI was investigating two more charges against him for his alleged involvement in the murder conspiracy against Dera manager Ranjit Singh and a journalist, Ram Chander Chatterpatti.
