Congress mulls Jaganmohan for Andhra chief ministership

The Congress leadership is considering Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy for the post of Andhra Pradesh chief minister, said a close aide of late chief minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, even as Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee clarified that a final decision would be taken at 'an appropriate time.'

K.V.P. Ramachandra Rao, a long-time friend of Rajasekhara Reddy, told reporters that the central leadership would take a decision on this issue. YSR, as the deceased chief minister was popularly known, was killed in a helicopter crash in Andhra Pradesh's Nallamalla forest Sep 2.

In Delhi, senior Congress leader and Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee told women journalists that a decision on YSR's successor would 'be taken at an appropriate time.'

Asked about the chorus for naming YSR's son Jaganmohan Reddy as his successor in the chief minister's post, Mukherjee said it was 'an emotional upsurge after his death'. To further questions, he only said: 'It is not a major issue. It may noy take longer to decide.'

Congress spokesperson Manish Tewari, meanwhile, said the party would consider the demand of Jaganmohan's supporters provided if it came through a process.

'If at all there is a demand, which is reflective of people's sentiments; as long as it is routed through correct organisational process and brought to the AICC in-charge, then the party will definitely take it into consideration,' he told reporters in Delhi. He was referring to the All India Congress Committee leader M. Veerappa Moily who is in charge of theparty's Andhra Pradesh affairs.

Referring to K. Rosaiah, who has been installed chief minister following YSR's death, Tewari added: 'There is a chief minister in Andhra Pradesh. There is a cabinet in that state, which has taken oath and if at all at any point of time there is a change in the situation, we will inform you.'

Meanwhile, K.V.P. Ramachandra Rao, who is also member of the Rajya Sabha, met YSR's son Jaganmohan Reddy at the CM's Camp Office soon after his return from Delhi where he pitched hard for his candidature.

Rao met party president Sonia Gandhi, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and other senior leaders during the three days he was in Delhi and apprised Jaganmohan of the outcome of his talks.

He would return to Delhi after attending an all-party condolence meeting here Friday evening for further consultations with the leadership.

His visit to Hyderabad, meeting with Jaganmohan and return to Delhi triggered speculations in political circles in Hyderabad that the leadership was reluctant to name 37-year-old Jagan, a first time parliamentarian, as the next chief minister and has instead offered him the post of deputy chief minister or a berth in central cabinet.

The leadership is also reportedly ready to appoint him to some key post in the party.

Andhra Congress has no objection YSR''s son becoming chief minister: Chief Whip

The Congress party''s Andhra Pradesh unit reportedly has no objection to Jaganmohan Reddy, the son of former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y.S. Rajsekhara Reddy, becoming the next chief minister of the state, the party unit''s chief whip said on Friday.

M. Bhatti Vikramarka, the Chief Whip of the Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee, said that the unanimous view was that Jaganmohan Reddy should be the leading candidate for the post to ensure continuity of his father''s most cherished development-related programs and also because of the public service that he was doing.

The comment comes as a fierce succession race has begun notwithstanding the Congress party''s decision to put off the selection of a new leader till early next week.

Seeking to cash in on an emotional wave of sympathy, loyalists of the deceased chief minister have reportedly unleashed a strident campaign for making his son, Jaganmohan Reddy, the new chief minister.

"Jagan knew the mind of Rajasekhara Reddy. He alone can finish the unfulfilled agenda of his father," said government chief whip Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka who is marshalling the MLAs in favour of Jagan.

Congress sources in Delhi have thrown up other names as possible successors. They include Union Urban Development Minister S. Jaipal Reddy, Minister of State for Defence M. Pallam Raju, former Andhra Pradesh chief minister N T Rama Rao''s daughter and junior Union minister Purandeshwari Devi and acting chief minister M K Rosaiah.

Almost all the state ministers, about 22 MPs and several Congress legislators have pitched for Jaganmohan Reddy through the media even as hundreds of party workers gathered at the secretariat,

CM''s camp office, Gandhi Bhavan and various traffic intersections are vocally making a similar demand.

The Jagan group has reportedly met Union Law Minister M Veerappa Moily at the Lake View guest house to pursue their demand even as many Congress MLAs faxed individual memorandum to the party headquarters in New Delhi in support of Jaganmohan Reddy as CM.

They also called on Andhra Pradesh Governor N D Tiwari and submitted a list of 122 signatures in support of him being made the chief minister.

According to sources, there was even an attempt to pressure the governor to swear in Jagan as acting CM immediately, but that was abandoned as Rosaiah had already been sworn in by the time the loyalists reached Raj Bhavan.

Jagan, 36, is a first time MP from Kadapa and is merely 100 days old in politics. While Veerappa Moily made it clear that Rosaiah was only an interim CM and that the Congress high command will chose YSR''s successor in the next few days.

Sonia to stay away from Andhra Congress politics

All India Congress Committee chief Sonia Gandhi has taken a conscious decision of being neutral to Andhra Pradesh politics in the wake of the sudden demise of its chief minister Y S Rajashekhara Reddy, and wait for a three-member committee to brief her. Till such time, she is not likely to meet any leader from the state.
Congress will set up a three-member committee comprising of Union ministers Pranab Mukherjee, Veerappa Moily and AICC general secretary Digvijay Singh to work out a formula on the present crisis in Andhra Pradesh.

In order to gain time, the high command spoke to the three top leaders -- Pranab in London, Digvijay Singh, who was in Hyderabad, and Veerappa Moily in Delhi -- to have an informal meeting to chalk out the possible solution to the Andhra impasse.

Once the mourning period is over on Wednesday, the three-member panel is likely to meet in Delhi to take stock of the situation and later, if warranted, the committee members may visit Hyderabad.
