Movie review: om shanthi om

Finally, the much awaited biggie of this year is out and is surely here to make a thunderous presence. Farah Khan's ' Om Shanti Om' with the dream star cast of Shahrukh Khan, Deepika Padukone , Arjun Rampal and Shreyas Talpade has done it yet again. On similar lines with reincarnation stories , the movie starts with the backdrop of the 70s with Om (SRK), a junior artiste struggling to make it big and is madly in love with Shanti (Deepika) the reigning superstar. His dream to reach the top fizzles out when he dies in a mishap and this incident changes his life forever, he is now born in the present day and is a top star but then he fails to understand those flashes of those voices he hears, the 'Flames' that go up , his mother chasing his car sets him on a soul search to understand the roots of his past birth.Interestingly, Shanti (Deepika) reappears in the present day too but in a different aspect and how the movie takes you into a very mystic journey forms the rest of the film.Presentation Farah Khan has scored full points in her direction, she is improving by the day and with the excellent combination of Mushtaq Sheikh (writer) she has once again confirmed that she knows what she wants and how she can present it to the audience to give them the maximum. She is a full pack of surprises when it comes to the story and catches the viewer off guard many times, that's a very intelligent work which is hard to find these days. Supporting her with the story is an excellent cinematography by V Manikandan , some rich sets by Sabu Cyril, a very tacky dialogue pack by Mayur Puri and to top it all a heart rendering background music by Sandeep Chowta added with some pleasant numbers by Vishal - Shekhar duo especially the 31-star track and 'Dard -e - Disco' is the highlight of the film. The icing on the cake is the cast , SRK leads the pack as usual with a mind blowing performance and once again proves to the masses that he still has not forgotten his roots as a mass actor. Deepika shows equal maturity sharing screen space with a top star and has all the ingredients to become a successful heroine. The surprise package comes in the form of Arjun Rampal who has carried out the negative role with exceptional ease and Shreyas Talpade who proves that he has no weak knees when it comes to performing with the king of Bollywood. The other roles carried out by Kiron Kher, Javed Sheikh and Bindu add to the spice. On the flip side, the second half could have been well tailored but some intelligent editing by Shirish Kunder keeps you busy. Conclusion Walking into the theatre with an apprehension of 'Karz' and 'Karan Arjun' in mind , you will be in for a roller coaster ride as you not only get a taste of it but then more than what you can take. Every scene has something new to offer and there is a lot of freshness, it is like a journey that takes you back to the nostalgic 70s and then gets you back to the present day life with some real comfort. This is an out and out entertainer so don't expect to get messages to reflect or some thought provoking ideals to work on, it wont work here. It can be branded more on the 'sit back and enjoy' genre and will give your money's worth.

Aajanachele... Madhuri is ok Not the Movie

The story of comebacks have been pretty successful in the history of Bollywood be it the erstwhile Manoj Kumar or the recent Kajol, but then the jinx looks ready to break with the comeback of Madhuri Dixit which fails to impress from the very beginning.

The story starts with a phone call to Dia (Madhuri Dixit) in New York from her guru Makarand (Darshan Zariwala), who is in his final stage in a small town Shamli in India. Dia rushes to the town and gets transported to nostalgic times when she left the very place ten years ago on a bitter note and now Ajanta Theatre once the most happening place is now on the brink of destruction and is being looked at a real estate conversion by the local authorities.

In a dedicated will to stop this from happening, Dia joins hands with Doctor (Raghuvir Yadav), the caretaker of the theatre and vows to come up with a theatrical production with each member of the production from the same town in less than two months time. How she overcomes the obstacles posed by the local politician (Akhilendra Mishra) and the shrewd businessman (Irrfan Khan) and gets successful in her journey forms the rest of the story.Presentation Debutante Director Anil Mehta who is known for his cinematographic skills has failed to realize that ultimately it is the story line and the content in it that gets the audience to the theatre.

The major drawbacks in the movie are the script and the music and since this happens to be a musical as the title suggests, there is hardly a single number which the audience can carry home. Salim - Sulaiman (Music) have failed miserably in that department. What looked like a realistic cinema gets converted into a fairy tale as things fall into line very smoothly with not much efforts required. No one talks about the funds and its source to erect the grand set that comes in the climax (the set design is awesome to look at).

The only credits to the movie are the quality performance by Madhuri and some really interesting dialogue situations between Madhuri and Akshaye Khanna, who has given a stellar performance. Other talents like Irrfan Khan and Konkona Sen Sharma have been underutilized. The other departments like Cinematography and production design are perfect. The other cast in the form of Ranvir Shorey, Kunal Kapoor and others have done justice to their role. Conclusion Madhuri fans who expect her to make a smashing comeback will have to smash such ideas as the two main organs for a film - Music and Script have disappointed which led to the downfall of the movie. What could have been a very realistic subject has been presented in a very unbelievable manner, which has slipped the audience interest on the movie. The film has a feeble start and fails to pick up at any point.

Madhuri has to be appreciated for looking just the same when she left and credits to Akshaye Khanna for coming up with a brilliant performance. Both Madhuri and Akshaye actually set the screen on fire when they were together. The other departments have done a decent job.

This could perhaps be a major flop at the box office this year!!

tarezameen par ..good movie

Story: Aamir Khan does it again but this time the perfectionist has excelled not only in his performance but also as a story teller.

'Taare Zameen Par' is the story of Ishaan Awasthi (Darsheel Safary), an eight year old who lives in a world of imagination far away from the realistic sights, his world is full of beautiful animals, kites and colors which in no way seem to make an impact on the grown ups in society who believe in academics and discipline to be the only best things for a child.

As expected, Ishaan fails to perform in the classes and a freak incident that lands the boy in trouble spikes up his parents and they decide to put him in a boarding school much against his begging pleas. Their idea of imbibing discipline and order fails to do much for Ishaan and instead he goes into further recluse. In comes Ram Shankar Nikumbh (Aamir Khan), the new art teacher and contrasting to the regulars Ram motivates the children to use their imagination to the fullest and let their mind go as far as it can dream but this has no effect on Ishaan. Ram observes this indifference in the child and sets on a journey to understand the mind and heart of the boy. With an unconditional perseverance and care; he guides Ishaan to the ultimate discovery of himself.Presentation Words are no match for the brilliance exhibited by Aamir Khan in this film; apart from a stellar performance he has proved that he has a master story teller inside him. The notion that Aamir's film has only Aamir throughout the film will be totally wiped out when you watch this movie and what appears to be a fun loving movie for the kids is actually a movie about kids. The film enlightens on the finer aspects of a child's sensitivity and Aamir conveys it clearly to the audience that it is the world that has to be viewed from a child's eye and not from our thoughts and prejudices when dealing with them. The first half of the movie is an intense emotional recipe where tear jerking scenes are not a surprise and it showcases a marvel while showing the mother and son relationship. Till interval, the show is carried out literally by Ishaan and the second half takes you the heights with its challenging scenes and ends with a breathtaking and a truly revealing climax. Selva has tranced the audience with his camera and the master music trio Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy has come out with some catching tunes. The other technical departments have done a master's job in their area. Coming to the cast, this by no means is an Aamir movie when it comes to acting; the real show stealer was Master Darsheel Safary who has mesmerized the audience with his naïve expressions and emotions. Sharing screen space with a thorough professional like Aamir , Darsheel had the ease and reality to show a child's true personality. Aamir needs no words as yet again he has delivered what he knows best - perfection in action. A revealing performance by actress Tisca Chopra is an eye opener and she is one lady to watch out for in the movie. The other cast comprising of Tanay Cheda (Ishaan's friend) Sachet Engineer (Ishaan's brother) Vipin Sharma (Father) and the other teachers has been perfect. Conclusion Aamir khan deserves a standing ovation for his debut venture and one will agree after watching the film that he is on par with any talented directors in the industry. His presentation and his handling of such a sensitive subject in a matured way is revolutionary. A mind blowing performance by the child artist Darsheel Safary which sort of overshadowed some brilliant performances by Aamir and Tiscal Chopra. It is a must see for every parent and would be parent not just for the movie but the close relation it has with daily lives and the importance of respecting a child's thinking. Aided by some good music and some splendid camerawork, the movie is a masterpiece and can find its way through the awards and accolades.

Hollywood's Most Influential Infants

What comes to mind when you hear the name Shiloh? Chances are it's not the Civil War battleground or the hard-luck dog.

Most likely, it's the oft-photographed child of A-list couple Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, better known by their tabloid moniker "Brangelina." That wide-spread awareness has earned the A-list kiddie a spot at the top of Forbes' first-ever look at which Hollywood babies have the most effect on pop culture.

To determine which tykes were tops, we looked at both Web presence and press clippings for more than 50 A-list offspring (5 years old and younger) over the course of a year. Then, with a whittled-down list, we reached out to Encino, Calif.-based polling firm E-Poll Market Research for both awareness data for the kids and consumer-appeal rankings for their celebrity parents.

Shiloh's first-place showing comes from strong rankings across the board. Thanks to high-profile parents with an even more high-profile history, her arrival was long-awaited and -- no surprise -- much covered. In fact, the adorable 1-year-old, the only biological child of the globe-trotting set, popped up in more than 2,000 articles over the course of the year.

Colo. church gunman had been kicked out

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The gunman believed to have killed four people at a megachurch and a missionary training school had been thrown out of the school a few years ago and had been sending it hate mail, police said in court papers Monday.

The gunman was identified as Matthew Murray, 24, who was home-schooled in what a friend said was a deeply religious Christian household. Murray's father is a neurologist and a leading multiple-sclerosis researcher.
Five people — including Murray — were killed, and five others wounded Sunday in the two eruptions of violence 12 hours and 65 miles apart.
The first attack took place at Youth With a Mission, a training center for missionaries in the Denver suburb of Arvada; the other occurred at the New Life Church in Colorado Springs, where Murray was shot by a security guard, though investigators said he may have died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
"Through both investigations it has been determined that most likely the suspect in both shootings are one in the same," police said in court papers.
Colorado Springs police said the "common denominator in both locations" was Youth With a Mission. The training center maintains an office at the 10,000-member church.
"It appears that the suspect had been kicked out of the program three years prior and during the past few weeks had sent different forms of hate mail to the program and-or its director," police said.
Murray's relatives said they were grief-stricken and baffled.
"Our family cannot express the magnitude of our grief for the victims and families of this tragedy. On behalf of our family, and our son, we ask for forgiveness. We cannot understand why this has happened," they said in a statement read by the gunman's uncle, Phil Abeyta, who fought back tears.
In a statement, the training center said health problems kept Murray from finishing the program but elaborated little. Murray did not complete the lecture phase or a field assignment as part of a 12-week program, Youth With a Mission said.
"The program directors felt that issues with his health made it inappropriate for him to" finish, it said.
Police gave no immediate details on the hate mail. And the training center said that Murray left in 2002 — five years ago, not three — and that no one there can recall any visits or other communication from him since then.
Earlier Monday, a law enforcement official who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak publicly, said it appeared Murray "hated Christians."
Investigators have not said whether Murray singled out his victims. But the two people killed at the church — sisters Stephanie and Rachael Works, ages 18 and 16 — frequented the training center, their uncle Mark Schaepe of Lincoln, Neb., told The Gazette of Colorado Springs.
The two people killed at the missionary center were identified as Tiffany Johnson, 26, and Philip Crouse, 24.
Authorities searched the Murray house on a quiet street in Englewood on Monday for guns, ammunition and computers. No one was home when a reporter visited the split-level brick home early Monday. Murray's father, Ronald S. Murray, is chief executive of the Rocky Mountain Multiple Sclerosis Center in Englewood.
Matthew Murray lived there along with a brother, Christopher, 21, a student at Oral Roberts University in Tulsa, Okla. In a search warrant affidavit, investigators said Matthew Murray attended a home-based computer school and had worked at his computer for three to five hours a day for the past two years.
A neighbor, Cody Askeland, 19, said the brothers were home-schooled, describing the whole family as "very, very religious."
Christopher studied for a semester at Colorado Christian University before transferring to Oral Roberts, said Ronald Rex, dean of admissions and marketing at Colorado Christian. He said Matthew Murray had been in contact with school officials this summer about attending the school but decided he wasn't interested because he thought the school was too expensive.
Police said Murray's only previous brush with the law was a traffic ticket earlier this year.
The gunman opened fire at 12:30 a.m. at Youth With a Mission. Witnesses said he asked to spend the night there and opened fire with a handgun when he was turned down. They described him as a young man, perhaps 20, in a dark jacket and cap. Later, at New Life Church, a gunman wearing a trench coat and carrying a high-powered rifle opened fire in the parking lot and later walked into the church as a service was letting out.
Jeanne Assam, a church member who volunteers as a security guard, shot Murray, who was found with a rifle and two handguns, police said.
New Life, with a largely upper middle-class membership, was founded by the Rev. Ted Haggard, who was dismissed last year after a former male prostitute alleged a relationship with him. Haggard admitted committing unspecified "sexual immorality."
Youth With a Mission was started in 1960 and has 1,100 locations with 16,000 full-time staff, said Darv Smith, director of a Youth With a Mission center in Boulder

Welcome Movie Stills

..Welcome Movie reviw:Akshay Kumar has reached a stage where currently Shah Rukh Khan is

Akshay Kumar has reached a stage where currently Shah Rukh Khan is. No matter who is his leading lady, no matter which production house he works with, no matter what the film's genre is, no matter who directs the film and no matter who composes for his films - the fact remains that he is audience's darling and would hit gold in each of his films. His great run in last few years is a testimony to that!

This is the reason why even with names like Anees Bazmee (No Entry), Firoz Nadiadwala (Hera Pheri, Phir Hera Pheri), Anil Kapoor, Firoz Khan, Nana Patekar, Katrina Kaif and Mallika Sherawat involved, Welcome would go down as an Akshay Kumar release. With multiple composers like Anand Raaj Anand, Himesh Reshammiya and Sajid-Wajid involved, it only promises to be an added advantage. However, in case of Welcome, it turns out to be a major disadvantage as the music turns out to be way below the mark

.

The start of the album is good. Bring out the trumpets and lay down the red carpet - the celebrations have begun and party is on with the arrival of title song 'Welcome'. The music has a distinct David Dhawan touch to it with the title song of Partner (composed by Sajid-Wajid again) coming closest. Composed as a Western track with a distinct party feel to it, 'Welcome' is a high on orchestra number which has Wajid giving a voiceover and Shaan and Soumya Raoh pairing

up to croon the major part of the song. Even though the intermediate portions of the number aren't any great shakes as they turn out to be a routine fare, the music woven around the opening lines if a killer and ensures that there is no dull moment.

's fast becoming a trend (a healthy one though) to see one composer crooning for a fellow composer. Vishal Dadlani has been doing it for Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy, Anand Raaj Anand has done it for Pritam, Shankar Mahadevan has done this for Vishal-Shekhar and others and now he has done it again for Anand Raaj Anand for the number 'Hoth Rasiley'. Surprisingly, the song turns out to be very ordinary as it is excess of sound and fury which kills the impact.

The tune takes numerous twists and turns and a minute into the song, one tends to loose interest into the proceedings. Shankar comes along with Anand Raaj Anand and Shreya Ghoshal to croon this celebration number with an extremely loud Punjabi celebration setting to it. The only thing which can save the number from being a total disappointment is it's picturisation/choreography which may be done in a comic setting.

With Anand Raaj Anand playing the dual role of a composer as well as a singer for this song with Shweta Pandit joining in, 'Tera Sarafa' again belongs completely to the David Dhawan school of music. Nothing surprising here since Anees Bazmee has been a script/screenplay writer for numerous Dhawan movies in the past.

Coming back to the song, 'Tera Sarafa' again follows an unapologetic 'masti-dhamaal' mode with a focus mainly on getting foot tapping beats and keeping the heat on for fast paced proceedings. The USP of the song is Anil Kapoor and Nana Patekar shaking a leg with Mallika Sherawat, though one wonders if the song would have gone any further distance if not for this unique pairing! Ultimately 'Tera Sarafa' is the kind which is heard today, enjoyed mainly due to choreography and forgotten the moment film is off the screens!

nand Raaj Anand returns after a couple of tunes by Himesh Reshammiya and creates 'Uncha Lamba', the opening tune of which lifts has it's references in 'Makhna' [Bade Miyan Chote Miyan]. A number which could well find references in number of Punjabi-fusion-folk tracks, 'Uncha Lamba' has predominant Western arrangements which go well with the current on-screen image of Akshay Kumar. With Kalpana as his duet partner, Anand Raaj Anand gets into a romantic mode with this yet another 'masala' track which barely sustains itself for the situation and that's about it.

With great power comes great responsibilities - This can well be true for Akshay Kumar now as well! As mentioned at the very beginning, any film starring Akshay Kumar today is THE Akshay Kumar film. Whatever good or bad, it is attributed mainly to the superstar than anyone else. This is why even the music of Welcome, which is extremely ordinary in any case, will be termed as nothing less than disappointing due to high standards set for an Akshay Kumar film. Though thankfully the film seems to be highly interesting, Akshay fans would have to wait for Tashan and Singh Is Kinng in anticipation of some good music.

Oops, now what's that!? By the time an elaborate 30 second saxophone piece is through and one settles down to hear something soothing, the 90s style arrangements start scaring a listener. If this is not enough, what follows next truly catches you by surprise as Himesh Reshammiya (doubling up as a composer and singer) croons the word 'Insha Allah' in the highest possible pitch!

Heavy arrangements, as has been the hallmark of the album so far, doesn't spare a listener here as well even as Shaan and Akruti Kakkar come together with Krishna to croon some of the most ordinary/pedestrian lyrics from a music album of 2007. Just hear this one - 'Ab Jism o Jaan Mein, Dil Ke Jahaan Mein, Hai Tera Welcome, Aa Bhi Jaa'! Aided by 'dhol' beats, 'Insha Allah' turns out to be a routine 'masala' number which work more visually (that too due to Akshay's presence) than audio-wise!

'Kola Laka Vellari' - Now this is yet another number where one exclaims - Oops, now what's that!? Frankly, one can't actually comprehend what exactly 'Kola Laka Vellari' stands for. In fact even Google doesn't! The only good thing about this song is that Himesh Reshammiya is far subdued while crooning this one. A moderately paced song, the song has a mix of Western and Indian arrangements though in a trademark Reshammiya setting that made him a household name in last couple of years. A love song with sad undertones to it, 'Kola Laka Vellari' is barely decent but that's about it.

Mallika Sherawat pays tribute to Madhuri's choli ke peechhe

Mallika Sherawat will attempt to match the magic of Madhuri Dixit in her upcoming film Welcome .While the Sherawat girl doesn’t stand much chance of equaling Madhuri’s acting skills, she can come close to matching her sex appeal. This, Mallika has done by paying a tribute to Madhuri’s cult track Choli Ke Peechhey Kya Hai from Subhash Ghai’s ‘Khalnayak’.

Yes, ‘Welcome’ has a song that has been conceptualized on Madhuri’s hit song from the nineties. The new song is different from the old one in terms of melody and lyrics. But it has the same raunchy flavour to it and has been picturized in the same way.The number shows Mallika gyrating in a sexy outfit. Even the film’s main cast – Akshay Kumar , Katrina Kaif , Nana Patekar and Anil Kapoor – are a part of this song. Now it remains to be seen whether the song creates as much curiosity and attracts as many eyeballs as Madhuri’s song did many years ago.

Controversial lyrics in 'Aaja Nachle' song removed

Producers of Madhuri Dixit 's comeback film Aaja Nachle , which has run into a controversy over its title song, today apologised for the lyrics and said that immediate action has been taken to remove the objectionable words. The instructions to remove the offending lyrics in the title song of the film had been sent to all distributors and exhibitors on Friday night and will not be heard in theatres from Saturday, a release from film's producer Yashraj Films stated in Mumbai.

"It was not our intention to hurt the feelings of any individual or community of our great nation. If we have inadvertently hurt the sentiments of anybody, I apologise for the same," Yash Chopra , Chairman of Yashraj Films, said."We have taken immediate remedial action by deleting the line from the prints of 'Aaja Nachle' all over the country," he added. The film, which features Madhuri after a long hiatus, was released across the country on Friday but had been pulled off screens in Uttar Pradesh and Punjab after the lyrics of its title song were deemed offensive to certain communities.Piyush Mishra , the lyricist of the film has also offered an unconditional apology over the objections raised on the lyrics, saying he had no intention of hurting the sentiments of any caste."If my lyrics have hurt the sentiments of anyone, then I offer my apology. However, I did not have any intention to hurt anybody," Mishra said. The scriptwriter of films like The Legend of Bhagat Singh , Yahaan and 1971 , Mishra said he could not even imagine hurting anyone's sentiments.Mishra has also penned the songs of the film Black Friday , that met with critical acclaim.Deleting the controversial lyrics notwithstanding, Haryana today followed its neighbours Punjab and Uttar Pradesh in putting a ban on the screening of the film in the state.According to an official announcement in Chandigarh Saturday evening, the movie has been banned in all 20 districts of the state, including Gurgaon and Faridabad, bordering the National Capital with immediate effect till further orders. All District Magistrates in the state have been directed to take immediate action to suspend the screening of the film in their respective districts and send a report to the government immediately, an official spokesman said.He said that the decision was taken following reports from various quarters that there was "heavy resentment and anguish among the people belonging to Scheduled Caste community over some objectionable utterances in a part of the film allegedly demeaning their caste and thereby hurting their sentiments."Therefore, the possibility of violent protest and clashes leading to breach of peace and law and order situation in the state with resultant damage to public life and property could not be ruled out," the spokesman said. The order banning the screening of the movie has been issued under Section 6 of the Punjab Cinemas (Regulation) Act 1952 as applicable to Haryana, he said.
