Slumdog' child stars to get Govt flats in Mumbai

Slumdog' child stars to get Govt flats in Mumbai

India. (Mumbai)Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan has decided to provide Rubina Ali and Azharuddin Ismail, who have featured in Oscar winning `Slumdog Millionaire', one flat each from his discretionary quota, the Mumbai Congress said tonight. Chavan's decision comes hours after Mumbai Congress President Kripashankar Singh made an appeal to the CM for providing homes to the two slum kids, party's city unit spokesman Krishna Hegde said here.

Hegde is also a board member of the Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA), the state government agency that constructs low-cost houses. Rubina and Azharuddin, who have played the roles of Latika and Jamal respectively in the Danny Boyle-directed film, are currently living in Garibnagar, a slum locality in suburban Bandra.

Thank you Oscar : Actress

Thank you Osc arrahman

Thank you Oscar

Cloud 9

here are certain places you never imagine standing," said Simon Beaufoy, as he held the stage to receive an Oscar for best adapted screenplay for Slumdog Millionaire. "The moon, the South Pole, the Miss World podium and here." At Los Angeles's Kodak Theatre, they too would not have imagined the crush of humanity that would later cram on to the stage to receive the best motion picture award. It's been that kind of a year at the Oscars, and Slumdog Millionaire has been that kind of film. Endless and pointless debate has raged about the nationality of the film and its motivations, but in the over-the-top enthusiasm for its fairytale route through the awards circuit, the story of Danny Boyle's indie has become the stuff of Bollywood dreams.

This year, with the recession as backdrop, the Academy chose to keep the carpet redder, the props glitzier and, in calling on former winners in the acting categories to present the statuettes, the show celebrated itself like it never really has before. Watched from afar, the Slumdog narrative fed on that reaffirmed faith in the power of motion pictures and in turn nourished it. The Academy and its watchers thrive on making grand transformative points, most often about the human spirit. And Slumdog Millionaire, with its glimpses into urban underbellies and its celebration of human connections, would certainly fit that. Like it or not, it is a film impossible to ignore. Like it or not, you have to have been swayed by its anthem song, "Jai Ho". And whether or not this prepares the ground for an Indian original to cross over, there had to have been misty eyed moments when A.R. Rahman took his bow.

But the affection Slumdog Millionaire has drawn is on account of more than the film itself. It's come from the muchness of the Slumdog bandwagon. As the Kodak Theatre witnessed Sunday night, there's no stopping folks from piling on, and it's why Danny Boyle won so much goodwill. He just kept accommodating them. For a film to sweep the Oscars without a single nomination in the acting categories would normally be improbable - but, whether by design or old-fashioned graciousness, Boyle made his motley cast a star act. Even as the pre-Oscar award shows began making Slumdog the favourite, to us it continued to be the underdog making good. And that was how it remained through Oscar night. As they say, Jai Ho!

Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi is Shahrukh Khan's only film for 2008 (not considering his guest appearances in Krazzy 4 and Bhoothnath). The film is written and directed by Aditya Chopra, and features Vinay Pathak, Anupam Kher and Farida Jalal in side roles. Ghajini is the latest film from Aamir Khan to be released on Christmas this year. It's directed by A. R. Murugadoss. The other major cast of Ghajini includes Asin Thottumkal and Jia Khan. The film is about a rich mobile phone company owner, Prashanth Pawar(Amir Khan), who loses his memory after being hit on the head in a fight. I don't wanna give out any spoilers here, so if you wanna know more about the storyline, checkout Wikipedia.

Music of Ghajini is directed by the one and only A. R. Rehman. Absolutely great music. I was kinda disappointed with Yuvraa's music, but this one is great. I specially Behka and Ghajini and Kaise Mujhe and .... actually I love all of 'em. But the best has to be Kaise Mujhe, I'm listening to it right now and it's intoxicating!

By the way these songs are in MP3 format, they're a lot bigger than .rm files.

Jumbo, the animated children movie is directed by Kompin Kemgumnird. According to ScreenIndia.com, Jumbo is actually a 2006 Thai film called Khan Kluay (Wikipedia) and is already released on DVD in the US as The Blue Elephant. It doesn't really matter, but I don't see why they're trying so hard to hide that fact. There's no information on the creators of the film on any Bollywood website. Anyways, the main character is voiced Akshay Kumar. It's to be released on Christmas this year, on the same day as Ghajini.

Well, now let's talk about the music of Jumbo. Can you believe this, the movie may be for kids, but there is not a single kids' song in this movie! I'm not saying the music is bad, I like the song Everything Gonna Be Alright, but it's almost gangster rap! Come on, it's a an animated movie about a cute little elephant who goes searching for his mom. But why the hell are there rap songs in there? When I found out about Jumbo, I was so happy for all the kids but I'm very said right. My complaint is not about the quality of music, but the fact that it doesn't cater to kids. Btw, the songs are composed by Ram Sampat. To all the children out there, sorry guys, you can stick to that song from Ta Ra Rum Pum for now. They'll maybe think of you next year.

The music for Raaz - The Mystery Continues (a.k.a Raaz 2) is released, here are the songs some of you have been wanting so much :D. As they keep claiming, The Mystery Continues is not a sequel to the 2002 film Raaz. It follows a completely different storyline. It is directed by Mohit Suri and stars Emraan Hashmi, Kangana Ranaut and Adhyayan Suman in lead roles. I don't think I need to say this, right?.... that it's a horror movie?

Music of the movie is directed by new comers Raju Singh, Pranay M Rijia, Toshi Sabri and Gaurav Das who replaced Pritam, who replaced Neem-Sharavan. I haven't given the songs a listen yet, so I don't have anything to say except, ENJOY!

Golmaal Returns is a sequel to 2006 hit comedy Golmaal. It's directed by Rohit Shetty as well, and stars Ajay Devgan, Kareena Kapoor, Arshad Warsi, Tusshar Kapoor, Shreyas Talpade, Celina Jaitley, Amrita Arora and Anjana Sukhani. It seems like it did really well at the box-office, both overseas and domestic. Wikipedia says it surpassed Om Shanti Om's first day collection. I'm really surprised. I saw a little bit of the film, and didn't like it a bit. And the same goes for the music, which is composed by Pritam. I posted it 'cause so many of you kept asking for it.

The music of Sorry Bhai is composed by Gaurav Dayal and Vivek Philip. The songs aren't rated high on most sites, 3/5 at best, they weren't liked that much. My personal favorite of the lot is the title song, and I don't think the rest are so bad either. I just love the composers' use of the saxophone in songs. If I had rate this album, I would say 4/5.

Sorry Bhai! is directed by Onir and stars Sanjay Suri, Sharman Joshi, Chitrangda Singh, Boman Irani and Shabana Azmi. Siddharth Mathur (Joshi) and his parents travels to Mauritius for his older brother, Harsh's (Suri), wedding. In the middle of all the family chaos, Siddharth and his brother's fiance fall in love which adds fire to the flame. Sounds like a good family comedy to me, I just hope it's executed well.

It is produced and directed by Subhash Ghai and stars Salman Khan, Anil Kapoor, Katrina Kaif, Zayed Khan, Boman Irani and Mithun Chakraborty. It's about relationship between the three brothers and the issue of inheritence after their father dies. I watched the movie myself, however I didn't like it much. Warner Bros. Pictures's second Bollywood film, Chandni Chowk To China, is directed by Nikhil Advani (Kal Ho Naa Ho, Salaam-e-Ishq) and stars Akshay Kumar, Deepika Padukone, Ranvir Shore and famous Chinese actor Gordon Liu. The trailers looks beautiful, check it out. This is something all big budget Bollywood action films should strive for. I'm putting this in the 2009 category because the movie will be released on January 16, 2009. Don't forget to watch it, it's going to be great.

Dasvidaniya, which was released in November, is a film by Shashant Shah and stars Vinay Pathak, Ranvir Shorey, Rajat Kapoor, Neha Dhupia and Saurabh Shukla. But when the doctors tell him that he is going to die in 3 months, he makes a list of all the things he wants to do and uses the remaining short time of his life to accomplish and fulfill those wishes.

The music of Dasvidaniya is composed by Kailash Kher who has also written the lyrics for the songs. Great songs, sepcially Muskura. But more than all of them, I like the instrumental one. It's absolutely beautiful.

Billu barber

Priyadarshan's 'Billu' is about an ordinary man's extra-ordinary life. Releasing Friday, the film has Irrfan Khan in the title role while Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan makes a guest appearance in the comedy.

Earlier titled "Billu Barber", the film is now called "Billu" as it fell prey to controversies by the Hairdresser's Association of Mumbai for hurting their sentiments with its title - a week before its release.

'Billu" is said to be a remake of the hugely successful Malayalam film "Kadha Parayumbol" (2007). It was remade in Tamil as "Kuselan" and megastarRajnikant made a guest appearance in it.

Produced by Shah Rukh's Red Chillies Entertainment, the film's much-talked about special attraction apart from Shah Rukh himself are item numbers featuring Kareena KapoorDeepika Padukone and Priyanka Chopra.

"'Billu' is a beautiful film about relationships, love and friendship. I also have a good part in the film along with Irrfan Khan and Lara Dutta," Shah Rukh had recently said during a visit to the capital.

The story goes like this:

Billu (Irrfan) is a village barber, whose business is going for a toss, as he is not being able to adapt himself to the changing trends.

One day, a film unit visits his village to shoot a movie that stars superstar Sahir Khan (Shah Rukh), who Billu claims to have been friends with.

Billu's status in the village rises as everyone wants to meet the hero through the barber.

Billu fears that the star may not recognise him. He makes attempts to meet the star but fails and gives up.

The villagers believe he lied about the relationship with the star and insult him. The truth about his friendship with the actor comes out at the end of the movie.

Despite the pre-release buzz, the film has not generated mass appeal. In terms of music, its album has been average on the charts.

Priyadarshan's previous movie "Bhool Bhulaiyaa" (2007) was a hit and a laugh riot. It remains to be seen whether "Billu" succeeds in recasting his spell over the audience, with Shah Rukh being the icing on the cake.

Men value education more than chastity in women,

This Valentine's Day researchers at University of Iowa have taken the opportunity to a question that has haunted people for eternity - what men and women want in a partner.

In their study, University of Iowa sociologists Christine Whelan and Christie Boxer, found that men are increasingly interested in an educated woman who is a good financial prospect and less interested in chastity.

On the other hand, women prefer a man who wants a family and less picky about whether he's always Mr. Nice Guy.

For the study, the researchers analysed results of a 2008 survey of more than 1,100 undergraduates at the UI, the University of Washington, the University of Virginia and Penn State University, comparing the results to past mate-preference studies.

Since the 1930s, researchers have been asking college students to rank a list of 18 characteristics they'd prefer in a mate from "irrelevant" (0) to "essential" (3), allowing for a comparison of mate preferences dating back three generations.

And it was found that today's young adults rank love and attraction as most important, which didn't even make the top three a few generations ago.

"Marriage used to be a practical arrangement. Getting married for love or attraction was considered foolish and perhaps even dangerous," said Whelan, author of "Marry Smart: The Intelligent Woman's Guide to True Love" and a visiting assistant professor of sociology in the UI College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.

In the 1930s male respondents were seeking a dependable, kind lady who had skills in the kitchen. Chastity was more important than intelligence.

But, the recent results indicate that guys look for love, brains and beauty, and if the lady has a sizable salary to her credit, it's an added advantage.

Men ranked "good financial prospect" No. 12 in 2008, a significant climb from No. 17 in 1939 and No. 18 in 1967.

"These results are consistent with the rise in educational and career opportunities for women, and men's increasing desire to share the financial burdens with a future spouse," said Whelan.

However, chastity, which men ranked at No. 10 in 1939, fell to dead last in 2008.

"When we administered the survey, several female students snickered at the idea that we even included the chastity item. This is consistent with the widespread hook-up culture on college campuses," said Whelan.

Women of the 1930s ranked emotional stability, dependable character and ambition as the top three characteristics they wanted in a man. Attraction and love didn't come in until No. 5.

But today, women, like men, put love at the top of the list, with dependability and emotional stability rounding out the top three characteristics in their Mr. Right.

The ladies rated desire for home and children much higher in importance than men do.

In 2008, women rated desire for home and children fourth men ranked it ninth.

The researchers compiled a list of what the sexes look for in their prospective mates.

Slumdog

The True Pride of Indian at the Streets.. SLUM DOG

How Humanbeing is treated everyday.. HATS OFF to the Outsiders to make our eyes open..

its a true lesson to BIGGG-B and band of UP to realize that world is changing... they will bounce back with the same punch............ Muskters

Slumdog Millionaire opens the rotten face of India, does it? Does it show the so called “dirty underbelly” of India? Slumdog word is racist as alleged by a chap from Bihar. But really?? If I had one word to describe these comments it would have been a *beep*!!

By no means this movie is aimed at showing the chronic poverty of our nation. Many reviewers have criticized this movie for showing only the dirty reality of the country instead of displaying all those swanky buildings, glittering malls etc.

Slumdog Millionaire narrates a story of 2 siblings & a girl, who rise from the dirty slum life and move into different directions of life. The older brother (”Salim“-played by Madhur Mittal) ends up working for a gangster, the girl (”Latika“-played by Frieda Pinto) ends up as a show girl with the same gangsters and the hero of the movie the younger brother (”Jamal“-played by Dev Patel) ends up living a rather straight life as a tea server in a call center. Jamal reaches the “hot seat” of Kaun Banega Crorepati hosted by an arrogant quizmaster Prem Kumar (Anil Kapoor) who don’t want him to win the game. He calls the police to get Jamal Malik arrested on the charges of fraud at the end of day 1 of the show. At the police station Jamal is tortured first by the sound thrashing from Constable Srinivas (Saurabh Shukla) and then he is subjected to electric shock, all to make him speak about how a tea serving slumdweller can give the correct answers.

The movie revolves around the dingy slums of Dharavi. The heaps and heaps of garbage, dogs with flees, young Jamal jumping in a pit full of *beep* (*sic*), hindu-muslim riots, pimps, gangsters, rough language is some of the few characteristics of the film which together with the superb cinematography by Anthony Dod Mantle makes it an ultra realistic movie. Kudos to the director Danny Boyle and co-director Loveleen Tandon for the impressive direction and superb camera takes which shows the minutest of the details of the dirty slum life. The screenplay was outstanding.

Acting:If I had to rate the performance of the characters I would surely give a high five to the children artists of the movie. Almost half of the movie shows them and their acting was very natural and realistic. Dev Patel was fine too. Frieda Pinto didn’t had too much of the screen time but delivered good performance. Anil Kapoor was cool. Irrfan Khan as the deadly cop together with Saurabh Shukla gave the top performances together with the child artists. Mahesh Manjrekar was looking a real gangster. He was rough, bad and whatever you may call a gangster. Madhur Mittal as the older brother Salim was quite good.

Sound/Music: Well the music has so many nominations for the Oscars what more can I write!!??!!
The sound effects were superb. The background score was creepy good. “Jai Ho” track comes at the end of the movie. The song is classic but I doubt whether it would take away the oscar. Let’s hope for the best. A.R Rahman proves that he is the best in this field!

The movie has been given an “A” certificate and rightly so. It has some good amount of strong language, violence in the form of riots, torture, a child being blinded with hot syrup (something), murder and other such things happening in the slums. These violent scenes are quite chilling and tense.

Overall I would recommend this movie to every person who has a tag “Indian” attached to him/her. A detailed insight into the murky life of slumdwellers. Slumdog Millionaire is one of those movies which has a happy ending. And out of the 10 oscar nominations it would bag atleast three i.e in “cinematography”, “editing” & for the song “Jai Ho”. It is a perfect edge of the seat thriller wrapped in the ghostly realities of slums.
